Homeopathic Consultation

A homeopath does not treat "diseases" as such, but sees all the symptoms present as an expression of a central disturbance or disharmony in the whole person. These symptoms may be labelled conditions such as "asthma" or "migraine" but with homeopathy each patient will require a remedy based on a totality much greater than simply the name of disease.

The goal of the homeopathic consultation is to get to know the patient.

Thus, the patient will need to go through a very thorough and comprehensive consultation. This is because the homeopath is seeking to know and understand the totality of symptoms, signs and characteristics of the individual patient.

This all manifests in the form of being and reacting of the patient regarding everything in their life, everyday situations, one’s environment such as home, work, etc. and people who are around you. All this expresses the state of the vitality of the individual, which is important to the homeopath. The homeopath wants to know whether the patient has imaginary and fantastic thoughts, dreams, sensations, feelings and thoughts, general and physical features that characterize the individual. The homoeopath will ask about physical and emotional suffering and psychological that the patient has been through. Details are of utmost importance for the professional so that he or she can start the work of repertorisation and studying the case to arrive at the correct individualized remedy.

Therefore it is extremely important and essential that the patient is observed (to know thyself) in detail in relation to the way they think, feel, act and react, trying to understand the causes that are deep in the individual and at the root of the illness.

This process takes the individual to know himself. Samuel Hahnemann gave great importance to the characteristics related to the way of thinking and acting, the character and ethics. This shows us that he had broad understanding of the whole individual patient-disease, and carrying a psychosomatic approach. It is only nowadays that this approach has been taken into account by allopathic medicine. Yet these are the symptoms that patients have more difficulty in reporting to the homeopath because they are the most important level of the individual and of the individuality and also because they show our weaknesses and limitations, and which, to defend ourselves, we all try to hide our weaknesses all the time in our lives through the “mask” we wear. However this "mask" and its ramifications / expressions (symptoms) are directly related to our physiological and energetic imbalances which predispose us to various types of diseases.

The homeopath will also be interested in physical symptoms, but not in the same way as conventional medicine. But with the characteristics or modes that are characteristic of the individual: is this a person who feels cold easily, or is this a person who is always warm? If pain is present, what type of pain or feeling, what season or time the pain or appears? What weather conditions and weather affect the individual? What are the effects of foods and drinks, perspiration, defecation, menstruation, etc?

By taking into account the mental, emotional and physical and general susceptibilities that lead the individual to become ill; the homeopath will start the painstaking work of seeking and reaching an individualized medicine for the sick individual-disease binomial.

A remedy will be prescribed either dry tablets or a solution. Homeopathic medicines involve such minute doses that side-effects are avoided and they can be taken safely during pregnancy, by infants and the elderly. They are non-addictive and can be taken alongside orthodox drugs if necessary.

However, it must be stressed that homeopathic remedies are not innocuous, or even that homeopathy is not innocuous, since these remedies in irresponsible or inexperienced hands can cause much damage. Thus self-medication should not be contemplated.

What to do after taking the homeopathic remedy?

It is of utmost importance that the patient or their parents, guardians, or caregivers observe the emergence of any change however small, on all levels: physical, emotional, psychological. In addition also the change’s particular characteristics: duration, intensity, time and time of emergence, and so on. Also observe and record the transient reactions such as: initial aggravation of symptoms, the return of old symptoms, benign fevers, elimination through the skin (rashes and others), secretions, meaning that the body is reacting, seeking a rebalancing and thus, one should not interfere with these reactions, because they are brief and are accompanied by a general improvement in the patient, that are often imperceptible. The appearance of new symptoms and discomfort that did not exist previously, besides the intense and prolonged reactions should be reported to the homeopath, analogous to the adverse-side effects of medicine.

I should point out that according to the understanding of homeopathic philosophy of the health-disease, true healing does not mean the mere disappearance of one symptom or another.

True healing happens when an individual has achieved a greater state of general equilibrium, physical, emotional and mental.

Having explained everything above, the reader will have come to the conclusion that the homeopathic consultation is their time and space to explore and discuss their health issues, thoughts and feelings. My goal is to listen and try to understand you as an individual, both in health and in sickness, in order to prescribe a remedy tailored (individualized) for you.

All information provided is treated with respect and confidentiality.

The initial consultation can last up to two hours. Follow-up visits may last up to an hour. They are programmed according to individual needs, but typically are spaced at monthly intervals until one feels an improvement in his health.

A small case example
Can you give an example of how a homeopath to treat someone with a fever?

A careful investigation is conducted, which includes:
Possible causes of fever (eg: taking chill, draught)
Speed of onset of symptoms
Time of day or night that the symptoms are worse
Changes in mood or temperament of the patient
Changes in appetite or thirst - especially cravings for food or drink that are not usually unwanted
Color and coating of the tongue
Temperature of the body parts
Perspiration - location and type
Any unusual symptoms (unexpected or unrelated) such as fever, with heat on one side of the body. Homeopaths call these symptoms "strange, rare or peculiar”, and they have a special value in choosing the best possible remedy (the one most similar to the symptoms presented by the individual)
